Environmental and Economic Dimensions of Sustainability and Price Effects on Consumer Responses

Greta Coontz 20' (journal) This article discusses how consumers see sustainability and what their priorities are. Though there was a major lack of attention toward sustainability, the public is beginning to notice the dire need for a more eco-friendly society. The article pulls the definition of sustainable development from the United Nations in 1987 which states that sustainable development means “to meet the present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (United Nations 1987). The article also states that consumers care about the economy just as much as they care about the environment. The most logical way to be sustainable and keep the public happy is by balancing the economy and the environment. Without a healthy balance there is no point in attempting to create a fully sustainable society as it would collapse economically. This article is actually quite different from the other sources I have read. It takes a mid...

Contesting the Veil in America: Catholic Habits and the Controversy over Religious Clothing in the United States

Emily Yuan 20' (journal) This source talks about the controversy of Catholic Habits in the Unites States thorough out the years. Some religious habits are viewed as a degradation of women's dignity and value, but a ban on the habits in the United States might be impossible due to the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech including clothing items. However, "criticism of the Catholic habits gained steam in the United States in the nineteenth century", and "cultural and legal objections to its public presence would culminate" in the mid-twentieth century. Though there are no practical policies to push the change of habits, the controversy over this topic continues nowadays. More and more nuns around the world start to try new styles of habits without breaking the basic rules of their faiths; women who are not nuns begin to fight for more benefits for their compatriots. The attention to self-awareness from b...

Playing Princess: Preschool Girls’ Interpretations of Gender Stereotypes in Disney Princess Media

by Georgia Kisob '20 (journal) “Playing Princess: Preschool Girls’ Interpretations of Gender Stereotypes in Disney Princess Media” by Julia Golden and Jennifer Wallace speaks to the messages involving gender portrayed among the Disney princess media sector. The purpose of the study was to examine the recurring behavior and demeanor of young girls to fully assess their assimilation to the gender norms presented in media. The main four themes or focuses of the study are “beauty, focus on clothing and accessories, princess body movements, and exclusion of boys.” (Golden and Wallace 1)  This study relates to my research because it takes a deeper look at the social cognitive theory of gender development, which is my main point of research. It details how specifically these stereotypes form the female brain at such a young age. It specifically concentrates on the idea of “one-dimensional femininity” which can be harmful in the early stages of forming one’s gender i...
